Dealing With Mental Disorders And Other Abnormalities At The Office
This book chronicles in a light-hearted way cases of mental disorders and similar abnormal incidents which the writer encountered at his place of work. It includes his own case. It tells also of the attempts by those involved to cope, and how effective or otherwise their efforts were. Mental disorders are often misunderstood. Some people associate it with madness and insanity, and so attach a stigma. Some think only the weak-willed and weak-minded would be afflicted. The cases in this book attempt to show that it can happen to the best of us. In reality people who are very devoted to their work are more likely to be afflicted. Those who are more sensitive to their clients? needs are more likely to be traumatized by their clients? plights. There was the case of the office watchman who become paranoid because he stayed too long at his place of work. There was a very conscientious officer who became afraid to come to the office. And the writer himself gave a so-called 100% commitment to his work and got panic attacks when he tried to relax. The cases in this book also try to show that the symptoms of mental disorders can be similar to what is commonly thought to be spirit disturbances. Each could be mistaken for the other. A wrong diagnosis can of course lead to wrong treatment. But sometimes the ?wrong? treatment works, and the book tries to indicate why. Attempts are made to provide simple alternative explanations for what appeared to be spirit disturbances or even haunting. That is, to show that it could basically be tricks of the mind or some sort of hallucination, i.e. a form of mental disorder. Finally, for most of the cases, the writer to suggest what appropriate measures could be taken. A few cases however are left with unanswered questions, which hopefully will provoke readers into thinking more about them.
